5 Things Michelle Obama Learned From Her Mother To Make Her The Leader She Is Today

“There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish.”

- Michelle Obama

Michelle Obama is best known for her role as First Lady, but this strong woman was making herstory long before her husband became the first African-American president of the United States.

She was a strong believer in nurturing & empowering younger women to rise up in power as strong & meticulous leaders. She would always advise young women to educate & inspire younger generations - like what her mother did with her.

“I’m an example of what is possible when girls from the very beginning of their lives are loved & nurtured by people around them. I was surrounded by extraordinary women in my life who taught me about quiet strength & dignity” - Michelle Obama

So, today we are celebrating her achievements & understanding what she learned from her mother to make her the leader she is today!

Why?

We know, as mothers you are always looking out for your daughters (children) - thinking of how to nurture their leadership skills, how to lead them to believe they can have a successful life ahead…

Here are the 5 things you can do to inspire your kids to be great leaders in the future:

#1 Support Their Passions

It’s important to ask your daughter what she wants to be when she grows up.

You’ll probably hear very few mention “accountant” or “lawyer.” Most will give answers like “astronaut,” “ballerina,” or “professional basketball player.” These goals aren’t impossible to achieve, but unfortunately, as kids grow, many will leave those career goals behind.

Therefore, it’s important for you to let your kids know that they can do anything. We as parents need to encourage them to chase those dreams - as they’ll be more inclined to pursue challenging goals in the future, even if they never become astronauts, ballerinas, or professional basketball players.

# 2 Encourage problem-solving & growth

A lot of kids grow up with a “check the box” mentality - where they’ll do the bare minimum to complete a task without considering the quality of their work or what they could have done better.

So, every time you assign a chore to your kids - it’s important to check back & ask simple questions like “how did you do it?” or “is there anything different you could have done to make it even better?”

What does this do?

It encourages your daughters to be thoughtful in how they approach a task and challenges them to find the best, most efficient way to complete it - which is a skill highly needed by managers & future entrepreneurs.

It’s important that your kids thoughtfully approach an issue, address it head-on, and reflect on ways to improve in the future.

#3 Talk about money

Here’s the thing - too many parents shy away from talking about money with their kids. Kids may not understand everything you have to say about money. However, avoiding the topic altogether will make it hard for them to understand anything about it.

Although it's not just talking about money that’s important - they have to learn that earning it requires work.

This nurtures & encourages your children to respect hard work, be ambitious & understand the value of money.

#4 Challenge your daughter

Honestly, as much as we love them - we need to remember that the world does not revolve our children. They can’t always be the best or the brightest (it’s the harsh truth, we know).

Therefore, it’s important to always challenge your kids - to help them cope with competition & to accept the fact that they will not always be No. 1.

How does this help them be future leaders?

This helps them be humble; which eventually makes them surround themselves with people who are smarter, better, and more experienced in certain areas that they are - this helps them learn & grow.

By challenging your daughters now, it helps them prepare for the harsh world out there (we know it’s already difficult fighting for your place, as a woman).

You can challenge them on little things like:

  • Don’t let your kids win the game every time.
  • Don’t place their orders for them at restaurants.
  • Don’t protect them from the challenges that will help them learn.

It’s really that simple.

# 5 Set a good example

Kids may want to grow up to be astronauts, ballerinas, or basketball players, but the fact is that those people usually aren’t their heroes. We are.

Kids look up to and learn from their parents more than anyone else, so it’s important for us to be their best example.

This is what Michelle Obama said helped her be who she is today. She looked up to the well-educated & empowering women in her personal life - her mother & her grandmother too.

This is why till date - she fights to influence the next generation. She knows better than anyone that education is empowerment - particularly when it is applied to young girls - because she has seen its positive effects in her own life.

Michelle’s mother inspired & challenged her to exceed in academics, and it is because of that instilled drive that she was able to succeed. She has spent her entire life learning & teaching: understanding what is important to her & how to display that importance to others.

Everything Michelle Obama does is done with passion, and this passion is clear in every initiative she undertakes - something she says she garnered from her mother.

So, if a simpleton could nurture a future leader like Michelle Obama - by simply empowering her, nurturing her, supporting her passion, encouraging her to hone her skills…

What’s stopping you from raising a future female leader that would change the landscape in the field she dreams to pursue?
