The best $13,000 I spent in 2019

February 14, 2020

Since the start of October, as the weather gets cooler, I noticed that I’ve started to feel more lethargic.

And lazy.

I began dreading doing stuff I didn’t want to do.

Things like emptying the dishwater, doing the laundry, driving to Target to get groceries etc…

Which was a problem.

Because if I leave them be for a few days…

These chores start to pile up.

The house becomes a mess.

Guilt, annoyance and frustration creep in.

As someone who prides herself as very organized and tidy…

Having dirty plates and clothes around irritates me.

But whenever I felt lethargic, I don’t have the energy and motivation to get them done.

I get frustrated.

Then I get even more frustrated at feeling frustrated.

And if I’m not careful, this self-anger and self-annoyance will creep into my relationship with others.

I get angry at my husband for no reason.

I get frustrated at my kids over the smallest things.

Funny enough, around this same time, I was at dinner with my girlfriends… and Sharon mentioned that she had an in-home assistant that did all of this for her.

"Yea, she comes in, cleans, tidies the place up, and runs any errands I needed to be done," she said.

My first thought was “hey, that's what I need!”

I've always had an assistant who helps with things like tax forms and spreadsheets.

But I've never had someone who's helped around the house.

So after that dinner, I whipped up a job description for a "help at home" person and put it on Craigslist.

I wasn't looking for a maid...

Or an assistant...

Basically, I wanted someone who could "do it all"

Someone who could clean the kitchen, unload the dishwasher, rake the leaves...

And also pick up groceries for me, run to the post office etc...

All the chores that needed to be done.

But I don't want to do it myself.

After my post went live on Craigslist, I wound up getting 22 applicants for the job.

Most of them were terrible.

I finally settled on 3 of them.

And I did a Skype interview with each of them.

The one I ended up going with, Emma, clicked with me right away.

She was organized...

Reliable...

And she could do stuff on her own without me micro-managing her.

So we started with a 2-week trial.

I paid her 23 bucks an hour.

And she did an incredible job right off the bat.

Having her here every morning has been a game-changer for me.

She basically comes over at 9 AM and works for  2-3 hours each morning.

She washes all the dishes, unloads the dishwasher, wipes down the kitchen, picks up the living room, makes our bed, organizes our bathroom.

She usually does all that in the first hour.

And then after that, she'll do miscellaneous stuff that needs to be done.

Like dropping stuff off at the Post Office.

Or she picks up the groceries for the day.

Or grabs paper towels at Target.

These are all the stuff I have been doing.

And they needed to be done...

But it just didn't have to be done by me.

And once I did the math on how much I was paying Emma, it was a no-brainer.

It came out to like $11k-$13k for the year that I'm paying her.

Which is worth every penny.

Considering that having my sanity and relationships intact is priceless.

Anyways...

I wanted to share this with you since it's been a big relief for me this year.

My stress level has gone down. And I don’t get annoyed at the little things as much.

Now that Emma is helping me, I’m feeling much better now.

My stress level has gone down. And I don’t get annoyed at the little things as much.

I often joked with my girlfriends that Emma saved my marriage, my relationships and my mental health

Which is definitely worth more than $13,000.

So if you have the money...

And you don't already have someone like this...

I highly recommend finding someone.

You'll be a lot less stressed.

And you can get back to focusing on the things that really matter for you.

Things that rejuvenate your mind.

Things that energize your body.

Things that make you happier.
