These Celebrities Are Changing How We Think About Menopause

February 21, 2020

Menopause used to be a taboo subject- something your mum and grandmother went through in silence and frustration.

Back then, being "menopausal" is commonly associated with something, like a curse or dirty illness.

Instead of discussing it openly, we call it "The Change" in hushed voices, as though it's something to be ashamed about.

While there is still much to be done to achieve true equality for menopausal women, we're constantly encouraged and inspired to see many celebrities sharing their journey, experiences, and struggles openly.

As the saying goes, people fear what they don't understand.

By bringing more attention and awareness to menopause, we as a society can treat it less of a curse and more of a phase of life to be embraced, cherished and even loved.

1. Meg Matthews

Who: Former music PR and ex-wife of singer Noel Gallagher

Her Experience With Menopause:

“I didn’t leave the house for three months. I was so flat, I was riddled with nausea, my breasts hurt. I didn’t have hot flushes or any of the other things you are told are symptoms of the menopause. I had all the things that are lesser-known. My joints were so inflamed; I used to be able to get up and do a downward dog but I was walking to the bathroom like an old lady. It was taking my body a lot longer to wake up.

“I spent three months with the most crippling mental health issues. I was overwhelmed by life. I had this fogginess, I kept forgetting things and I really thought something awful was going on. I lost my libido, I had aches and pains, severe headaches, dry mouth syndrome and dry eye syndrome.

How She’s Bringing Awareness To Menopause:

Meg Matthews is now a health advocate for women going through menopause and perimenopause, sharing a lot of information, advice and treatment options. She's on a mission to get the nation talking about menopause.

Her next focus is to lobbying the government for trained nurse practitioners to act as the first port of call for women experiencing menopausal symptoms and to get TV writers to include a menopause storyline.

Favorite Quote On Menopause:

2. Gillian Anderson

Who: Actress, producer, writer, and activist

Her Experience With Menopause:

“I was used to being able to balance a lot of things, and all of a sudden I felt like I could handle nothing. I felt completely overwhelmed. I felt like somebody else had taken over my brain.

“It was eight in the morning and I remember throwing my coat down on the floor in front of at least two of my children, and saying out loud, 'This day sucks!' The day hadn't even started, but there was something about my inability to handle anything that morning that alerted me to the fact that something was up. And as the day went on, I kept having to excuse myself from meetings and go into the bathroom to cry.”

How She’s Bringing Awareness To Menopause:

Gillian Anderson and journalist Jennifer Nadel wrote a book called "We: A Manifesto for Women Everywhere," sharing their experiences and struggles with menopause to bring more attention and advice to this topic

Favorite Quote On Menopause:

“Well, there’s an opportunity for fear around every corner, fear of the future, fear of what if. But the acceptance of wherever we are, whoever we are, is freedom.”

3. Gwyneth Paltrow

Who: Hollywood Actress and CEO of Goop, a lifestyle brand with an emphasize on menopause

Her Experience With Menopause:

“I think when you get into perimenopause, you notice a lot of changes.

“I can feel the hormonal shifts happening - the sweating, the moods.

"You’re just like all of a sudden furious for no reason.

“While I wasn’t overly focused on my hormones in my thirties, I do a panel every six months now to ensure that everything is aligned.”
